James B. Chastain established the home in memory of his wife, Mary, his father, Howell, and his mother, Elizabeth Archer. Chastain Home is in the historic residential section of Halifax, looking much the same as the 19th century private homes surrounding it.
Chastain Home is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia for residential living for eight residents. All residents must be able to perform in all areas of daily living with minimum assistance. Residents are required to abide by all rules and regulations of the Commonwealth and Chastian in order to provide a safe and secure home for everyone. The cost of care is set on a sliding scale, based on the prospective resident’s assets and income.
The staff of Chastain Home strives to provide a pleasant, home like atmosphere. Residents live and interact as a family on a daily basis, and everyone is encouraged to actively participate in church services, social affairs, and political groups of interest. A long-standing tradition of Chastain Home is the active involvement or its residents in all aspects of community life.
Throughout the year, Chastain Home hosts several special events and encourage residents to invite family or friends, providing opportunities for socialization with others outside the immediate environment.
All resident rooms are private and include a private bath. Housekeeping is provided once a week, but residents are encouraged and required to keep their room tidy and clutter-free at all times. Three family style meals are served daily in the dining room. Mail is carried out and delivered daily Monday through Friday.
